El Malo is a pop-up Mexican food experience in Amsterdam. It came to be personal project with the objective to enlighten friends from Amsterdam and Europe about what a real Mexican comfort food should taste like, and how a real salsa should be a enhancement to the taste of food, not a killer flavor.
Based on the Mexican Sign painting, and lowbrow art on restaurants and stands, the direction of the branding and illustration aim to portray and pay respect the bootleg magic you see in Mexico. Napkins for the food where created in risograph printing and function as flyers, napkins holders, and postcards. In the same method the labels for the different salsas function as a DIY label.
Is good to mention that the name of el Malo, came to be as part of a cooperation with our brother restaurant el Feo in Vienna, with the vision that one day el Bueno, will show up in some part of Europe.
